The Villages Chiropractor - Piriformis Syndrome

If you have been having pain in your buttocks while sitting or walking upstairs you may have piriformis syndrome. The piriformis muscle is a band like muscle that overlies your sciatic nerve and lies underneath the Gluteus Maximus. This muscle is designed to help externally rotate the hip.
This muscle can become irritated and inflamed from an injury or chronically applying too much pressure on the buttocks. One example of this would be when men carry their wallet in their back pocket and the piriformis muscle will go into a spasm over a period of time.
Symptoms of this syndrome are pain while sitting, sleeping, or walking up stairs. Other symptoms may include numbness and tingling in the buttocks running down the leg. Treatment for this include using therapeutic ultrasound and applying heat.
This is commonly seen in people that play pickle ball and golf due to the rotation if the hip while playing these sports.
